Ô Cirandeiro
Brazilian Song and Dance
The Ciranda is a traditional Brazilian song and dance. It originates from the north-east of Brazil and is often a dance for children. The dancers join hands and dance in a circle. The Cirandeiro is the person who leads the circle dance. The Escola Anael in Várzea da Roça, in Brazil shared the "cirandeiro" with us because it is "always" sung there. As the students do their morning round every day, it is also sung and danced to, but especially at festivals. And everyone who attended Escola Anael wanted to learn the Cirandeiro.

Várzea da Roça, a small town of about 15,000 inhabitants in the middle of the dry hinterland of Bahia, feels like the "end of the world". This area was a recruitment area for the slave trade in the 19th century and is now a place many people just want to get away from because there is no work. However, people then end up in the favelas of the big cities and have no prospects there either. The question of a resident from Várzea da Roça was the reason for Doris and Wolfgang Knipping to visit this place. The need was immediately evident and so the two decided to found a kindergarten in 2009 and a school in 2010. With the kindergarten and school, which are now run by local people, a hope for the future, more self-confidence and many more skills are being created.

The collection of songs from all over the world was created as part of the single-day campaign Waldorf-One-World-Day, WOW-Day for short. On this day, children and young people are directly and actively committed to a better world. Besides, they organize a multiplicity of special donation actions, that connect humans on all continents with one another.
