Children and young people in war and crisis zones face unimaginable hardships: bombings, sudden flight from home, the loss of loved ones, and daily exposure to violence. These experiences leave deep emotional scars that can shape an entire lifetime, if the wounds are not addressed with care, safety, and professional support.
Since 2006, the Emergency Pedagogy initiative of the Friends of Waldorf Education has been standing by those affected in the world’s most challenging crisis situations. Our teams provide immediate psychosocial stabilization, creating moments and spaces of safety, warmth, and healing. We believe that every child deserves a place where they can express themselves freely, process what they have lived through, and rediscover their inner strength. With your donation, you help us create and preserve these safe, healing spaces.
Our Missions in Crisis Regions
Ukraine
We have been active in Ukraine since 2022, focusing on the long-term establishment of emergency and trauma pedagogy: through training programs, we enable local professionals to provide ongoing psychosocial support. In addition to educational work, we have provided financial support to seven partner organizations across Ukraine, enabling them to offer comprehensive emergency and trauma pedagogical services for children and young people. With your donation, we can continue to support our local partners!
Gaza
Since 2009, we have repeatedly supported various projects in the Gaza Strip: helping to establish child protection centers, training local specialists, and creating spaces where children can still be children despite the prevailing violence. In 2014, the “Nawa” Center for the protection of children and young people was established in the southern Gaza Strip. There is still no sufficient support program for very young children, and with your donation we aim to change that.
Myanmar
The strong earthquake in Myanmar at the end of March 2025 not only had immediate consequences for people in the directly affected region. In places like Lashio—far from the epicenter—communities are still grappling with the impact, compounded by the ongoing civil war. Despite challenges such as displacement, conflict, and an increasing lack of resources, Waldorf kindergarten teacher Ying Mwe continues to create a safe space for children in a village near Lashio. Here, children can sing, paint, and listen to stories—they can simply be children. To continue supporting this vital work, we urgently depend on your donations.
