C.R.E.A.R.: Working with street children in Brazil
The C.R.E.A.R. is located on the outskirts of the district of Vila Aparecida, one of the poorest parts of Capão Bonito in the state of São Paulo. It is this poverty that motivated the foundation of CREAR in 1994. It aims to help the local people, and especially the children, develop their skills. By now, there are plenty of educational offerings: a day-care for toddlers and preschoolers, workshops for adolescents in music, crafting, art, sports, and gardening, as well as a crafting group for mothers from the neighborhood.
The district of Vila Aparecida in Capão Bonito is three hours by car from the Brazilian City of São Paulo. The district belongs to the poorest of the region. The majority of the inhabitants are victims of alcoholism. Only few inhabitants follow a daily work routine. Many earn their daily subsistence with seasonal harvest work. Malnourishment, broken family structures, child labor – these are the challenges C.R.E.A.R. faces every day. Through our work, we are trying to have a positive effect on the children, adolescents, and their families and in this manner open up new perspectives.
The entire work of C.R.E.A.R. is based on Waldorf education. The institution aims to develop capacities, so the inhabitants become empowered in order to positively shape their lives through their own efforts. For this reason, C.R.E.A.R. offers an environment in which about 150 children and adolescents between the ages of 1 and 14 years can experience safety and creative development. We also integrate their families into our work. At C.R.E.A.R., they find contact persons for many different concerns.
By now, there are plenty of educational offerings: a day-care for toddlers and preschoolers, workshops for adolescents in music, crafting, art, sports, and gardening, as well as a crafting group for mothers from the neighborhood. The initiative does not receive any kind of funding by the state or the municipality. For that reason, large parts of the costs will have to be covered by donations.
