Ukraine: Lessons at the Phoenix curative pedagogical school, despite all the obstacles

News ,  Current news ,  Waldorf worldwide

For over 20 years, the Phoenix curative pedagogical school in Kharkiv has been supporting people with disabilities. The staff at the school are doing their utmost to continue working with the children and young people as best they can, despite the war. The Friends of Waldorf Education have been supporting the school for many years and, thanks to the help of a generous donor, are able to provide an additional monthly sum of 1,000 € towards staff costs for an initial period of six months. Valeriya Medvedeva emailed us from Kharkiv in April:

This winter has been very harsh. February was particularly cold, with temperatures dropping to minus 25 degrees. The Russian army has repeatedly bombarded Kharkiv with missiles and drones; our city continues to come under fire on a daily basis. Fortunately, the homes of most of our pupils and teachers remain undamaged, as they live in parts of the city that have not yet been affected. However, on 3 February, the largest thermal power station and several substations were destroyed. In a great many apartment blocks, the central heating failed, and it took almost a month to restore it. In many homes, the temperature dropped to near freezing.

On top of that, there were frequent power cuts this winter, sometimes lasting as long as two days. Despite the difficulties, we continued to hold regular lessons with the pupils. When it was very cold, lessons took place in the Red Cross basement room. In March, we also began preparations for Easter. Together with their parents, the pupils used stamps to make greeting cards and towels, which is a traditional Ukrainian craft.

I cannot find the words to express the deep gratitude I feel. The warmth of the kindness you have shown us – through your thoughts and actions – is far stronger than any cold we are currently facing.
