Fiji: Moments of genuine Connection

The Fiji Islands are characterised by lush rainforests, turquoise lagoons, volcanic mountains and a warm-hearted, culturally diverse population. In the Domain district of the capital, Suva, the country’s only Waldorf initiative to date has been in operation since 2011: the Flametree Kindergarten. Following the early death of her mother, Nanise Sauvere was raised by one of the kindergarten’s founders and now works there herself. She is now the headteacher and coordinator, and with great dedication supports the children, families, and her team through the daily life of the kindergarten. She reports on this special kindergarten for Waldorf Worldwide:

The idea for Flametree Kindergarten was born over 15 years ago from discussions among a group of parents who wanted to protect the world of childhood – so that children could learn through freedom, draw on their own initiative, flourish through play, and truly develop their creative potential, without being overwhelmed by a fast-paced educational environment.

We look after children from the local Fijian community, as well as children of expatriates. Many parents choose our kindergarten because they feel that their children can grow up here in a safe, respectful and nurturing environment. They value our nature-based learning, the daily rhythm and the way in which the children develop self-confidence, freedom and independence. It never fails to move me to see how well the children settle in and how strong the relationships between parents, children and the team become.

Working in a Waldorf environment is something very special to me. The daily rhythm, underpinned by stories, songs, movement activities and quiet moments, creates an atmosphere of calm and security. I find eating together particularly valuable – it not only strengthens the sense of community but creates moments of genuine connection.

Waldorf education sees the whole child: head, heart and hands. It challenges me and inspires me at the same time. It encourages me to slow down consciously in everyday life, to be truly present, to work with mindfulness and intention – and to be an authentic role model for the children.
