In some countries, many parents cannot provide their children with enough food. They often have to work long hours and travel great distances to earn the little money with which they cannot adequately feed their families. So, on the one hand, they are not there to eat meals regularly with their children, and on the other hand, they are hardly able to procure enough food. Thanks to the many donations we received in response to our appeal for donations for school meals in 2018, we were able to support Waldorf schools, Waldorf kindergartens and therapeutic education institutions in Kenya, Zanzibar, Haiti, Nepal, Ethiopia, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt and other countries that work with families where a food emergency happens particularly often. Over the last five years, we have been able to forward more than €200,000 as donations to schools and institutions.
By feeding the children, the schools take on a multi-layered responsibility. They also have little money at their disposal. Nevertheless, it is important that the children are not only somehow filled, but that they also receive a nourishing and varied diet. At the same time, the school becomes a most important poin for learning about nutrition and food preparation - the children learn which foods are good for them, and which are not. In addition to this, the sharing of meals teaches important social skills.
Since 2020, hunger in the world has been on the rise again. Climate change, the Corona Crisis and wars have led to almost 830 million people currently going hungry worldwide. This makes it all the more important that we can continue to provide meaningful feeding programmes and nutritious school meals to Waldorf schools in the most adversely affected regions of the world. We are happy to recieve any donation with the purpose "school meals".
