A WOW-Day with obstacles

News ,  Corona ,  Current news ,  Waldorf worldwide ,  WOW-Day

Despite the school closures and other hurdles due to the Corona virus restrictions, a great many committed students and teachers have already participated in WOW-Day 2020. It has been an extraordinary year requiring extraordinary and creative ideas for action. Sponsored runs in small groups, making apple compote to sell at school, working on the nearby farm, or collecting acorns in the forest are just a few of the many and varied activities undertaken.

You can find an impression here of the work of Class 5 at the Waldorf School Soest, in Germany, where the pupils collected acorns with great diligence.

WOW-Day at the Waldorf School Soest

The children of Class 5 in the Waldorf School Soest took part in the WOW-Day this year! At the beginning of November, as part of the botany lessons, they went together to the Arnsberg forest to collect acorns so that the rangers can replant the bare patches in the forest. Olli, one of the five rangers in the Arnsberg forest, told the group a lot about pioneer plants (mosses, ferns and lichens) and fungi and taught the children how to build enclosures that are set up in the forest to protect young plants from being eaten by the wild animals. Together, the children were able to collect many kilos of acorns and thus, not only do something for the forest, but also for their chosen WOW-Day project.

The pupils recorded their WOW-Day actions themselves and made some beautiful accounts. Here you can see some examples:

The 5th class of the Waldorf School in Soest collected about 1,800€ in different actions this year. For example, half of the class collected acorns to plant new oak trees. I also baked biscuits with my friends. It was a lot of fun for me.  Kind regards, Class 5

What I did on WOW-Day

Jala, Malou, Noah and I baked cinnamon stars, cookies, ginger biscuits and vanilla crescents on WOW-Day. We packed bags about 80 grams and sold them to friends and family. Because so many people wanted to buy the biscuits, we had to bake twice more. We also cleaned at Malou's house. While cleaning we also did tricks; for example, when we had to clean a door and couldn't reach the top of it. Jala and Malou made a ‘robber ladder’ and then I could reach the top of the door.  In total, we raised about 323€.

What I did on WOW-Day

I collected deposit bottles on WOW-Day. First, I had to write notes to all the people from my village and ask them to put their bottles at the front door. Because of the Corona measures we wanted to have as little contact as possible to protect the people.

I also sold chestnuts, nuts, homemade fairies and herbal salt. I did all this with Samuel, a classmate.  In the end we earned 111€.

Your Marie.
