The Carapongo Valley is located in the outlying district of Lurigancho-Chosica, east of the Peruvian capital Lima – a region that is scenically beautiful but also marked by poverty. This is where the Sonqo Kusichiy educational and social project is based. The name comes from the indigenous Quechua language and means ‘a joyful heart’. It is a fitting name for a project that not only provides children and young people from disadvantaged families with school education but also encourages creative development and the courage to face the challenges of life.

Brazil: To strengthen a sense of shared humanity

pupil in Brazil

The small town of Várzea da Roça is located in the hinterland of the Brazilian state of Bahia, about 300 kilometres northeast of the capital Salvador da Bahia. There are limited employment and educational opportunities for the people living here. As a result of this, increasing numbers of people are moving to the big cities, where they usually live in the increasingly crowded favelas. Life in Várzea da Roça is often characterised by poverty, violence, drug use, and prostitution. This has consequences for children and young people: they do not do well at school and eventually stop attending altogether. The Escola Waldorf Anael was founded almost twenty years ago for precisely these kinds of children. Waldorf teacher Doris Knipping has been involved with the school since the beginning. She recalls the time when the school was founded and how it developed.

It was established under the most basic conditions in 2008 as a small school with sixty children and has continued to develop ever since. It is an important educational opportunity for children in this rural area of Kenya, whose families often have very low incomes.

Pupils from Hermanus Waldorf School display their paintings

The Hermanus Waldorf School was founded in 1994 by parents who wanted their children to receive a Waldorf education. They were responding to the lack of pre-school facilities in the townships of Zwelihle and Mount Pleasant. From the outset, there was a clear vision: inclusion and equal opportunities – regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion or economic status. Today, the Hermanus Waldorf School has grown into a well-established educational institution in the region – and is once again facing a significant developmental leap: the expansion of the upper school to include a vocational section.
