Peru: Estrella del Sauce is a cultural association legally registered in Peru. It seeks to support education and social development by working with the public schools and local communities from our Waldorf background. This work is done with support from young volunteers from the Weltwärts program and with donations from Freunde der Erziehungskunst.
The association Estrella del Sauce was established in 2006 by Lourdes Jibaja and Martin Stevens both Waldorf teachers. From 2010 the association has been part of the Unesco Club network.
They began their work offering classes in handwork, art, woodwork, help with children's homework, reading and writing for adults and English in various andean communities near Cusco. Further they also offered educational training to teachers interested in learning new methods for use in their classrooms.
The two founders helped establish a new kindergarten for the Q'ewar association in Andahuylillas and the Kusi Kawsay school in Pisac. They worked with street children in Pisac providing them with hot food and some educational support.
In 2011 they moved to Sauce, near Tarapoto in the northern jungle of Peru, offering classes in a small rented classroom with workshops and classes for children from 2 to 12 years old in two groups. The local teachers from the public schools requested teacher training classes and observation of their teaching work. In the Shipibo tribal community they work with a mother's club and in 2009 with the help of the Freunde der Erziehungskunst Estrella del Sauce built a small school and two members of the community are in charge of this project. They receive teacher training, funding and visits.
This year 2012 they are offering teacher training in Cusco and in Sauce in three week modules two times a year. In Sauce they are assisting the teachers in two public schools. The volunteers are helpers in the Kindergarten every morning. In the afternoons they continue receiving children from 2 to 12 years old with handwork and art workshops and they hold English classes for children from 12 years old.
Recently Estrella del Sauce has also begun working with adults from 50 years and older who want to learn handwork. Now they would like to finish the construction of a woodwork shop and handwork classroom so that they can offer more classes for teenagers in woodcarving, woodturning and jewelry.
Because Estrella del Sauce works with poor people all the services who are offered are done on a voluntary basis and can only be financed by donations.
