Impressions of the WOW-Year: WOW-Day in Czech Republic

Current news ,  Waldorf worldwide ,  WOW-Day

"At the end of September our class organized an international charity event, Walden. Walden included a bazaar, a book sale, children's workshops, retail stands and refreshments. For the first time this year Walden had an entry fee. All proceeds were donated to a school in Haiti. The reason we chose this school is because of the unfortunate current situation there resulting from multiple natural disasters and years of political turmoil."

Worldwide solidarity with Waldorf institutions – that is the idea behind Waldorf-One-World, WOW-Day for short. For one day, committed people collect donations in many different ways and give the money to Waldorf facilities in need. For the fifth time, the Waldorf School in Příbram in the Czech Republic has been participating in the worldwide campaign day. WOW-Day coordinator Iveta Machutová tells us how WOW-Day 2019 went:

At the end of September, our class organized an international charity event, Walden. Walden included a bazaar, a book sale, children's workshops, retail stands and refreshments. For the first time, this year Walden had an entry fee. All proceeds were donated to a school in Haiti. The reason we chose this school is because of the unfortunate current situation there resulting from multiple natural disasters and years of political turmoil.

Our Bazaar group organized a baazar which is a traditional part of every Walden. It may surprise you, but behind the simple, well-arranged sale lie hours of hard work. We would like to thank the school library and everyone who helped out. We would also like to thank the nineteenth Příbram scout troop, who helped us run the event. The Walden morning program included retail stalls and children's workshops. The traditional face painting stall was a great success. At the adjacent stall, children could draw or paint pictures. If they wanted to make something to take home, they could make a flower out of wool or a stuffed animal. We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of our woodworkers, who provided additional children's activities, and also our graphic designers. A peaceful rest area for children was also provided in the children's corner.

Preparing refreshments for Walden was harder than our group could ever have imagined. Nevertheless, with the help of our wonderful parents and class teacher, we managed to pull this task off. It is safe to say that people thoroughly enjoyed our treats. There was also a skillful magician. This attraction was mainly for children, however it was a great show for all ages! The highlight of the day was when three local heavy metal bands performed an afternoon of entertaining shows. It is worth mentioning that these bands also generously donated their proceeds to the cause. In our opinion, the event was a huge success, not only as a community event but also as a fundraiser. In the end, we were able to donate an unbelievable total sum to the school in Haiti. This is thanks to our hard work, cooperation, and some donations from our school community.“
