Jungle Theatre Company brings together diverse Cape Town Waldorf Schools

The Jungle Theatre Company (JTC) was established in 2004 to inspire and empower disadvantaged children and adolescents, to make positive changes in their lives, and build a peaceful and vibrant South Africa. JTC’s professional artistic team from diverse communities draws on South Africa’s cultural heritage and indigenous languages to find connections to the environment and human nature, creating and performing original and accessible African children’s theatre shows, which bring together music, dance, masks, puppets, clowning, and storytelling. This year, JTC facilitated an inter-cultural theatre program with fourth-grade children from Constantia & Zenzeleni Waldorf Schools. The Cape Town based schools serve very different communities in Khayelitsha & Constantia and thus have little interaction. They often don’t get to experience each other’s cultures or languages. During the program the children learnt from each other and had to opportunity to hear new languages, i.e., isiXhosa & English. Together they explored an African folktale linking Norse & isiXhosa mythology, which they adapted for the stage and then performed.
