WOW-Day: A thank you letter from Brazil

The Associação Beneficente Guainumbi is an institution we were able to support in the context of WOW-Day 2017. It is a social therapeutic institution for people with special needs, located at the outskirts of the city of São Paulo in Brazil. The institution started as a small project. Today it provides a place of community and of learning for more than 100 adolescents and adults. Guilhermina Monteiro, who works at this Brazilian institution, tells how they are making good use of the WOW-day donations:

“It is a great joy to tell you how valuable the donations from your campaign were for our institution. At the time, we were not able to pay the salaries of our drivers, who reliably pick up our young people with special needs from home on a daily basis and later drive them home again.

Guainumbi works with people with disabilities who come from socially disadvantaged and often difficult families. Many of them have already experienced great troubles; they have suffered hunger or have lost a parent, if not both. In our facility, the children receive three meals a day and take part in therapeutic workshops, such as baking, carpentry, music, drama, dancing, and gardening. We also help them to learn the three Rs.

Since many of the people placed under our care live outside our district and are unable to use public transport, we depend on our own minibuses, which bring them here and back home safely every day. Oftentimes, we had to interrupt our daily transportation service because there was not enough money. Unfortunately, we receive no state funding for our institution, which is why we are so incredibly thankful for your donation! Thank you so much!”

Take part now! The time frame for this year’s WOW Day is from 29 September to 29 November. We invite all people in curative educational and social therapeutic institutions, as well as all students at Waldorf Schools to be a part of this worldwide campaign and to organize their own WOW Day this year. 100 percent of the proceeds will be forwarded to Waldorf and social projects. You can find all the information you need here.
