All classes, from class 1 to 13 can take part in the WOW-Day, if the following conditions are fulfilled: the organization and carrying out of the project should be age appropriate, the teacher must be involved in the decision making in the class and the regulations must be followed.
By doing one-day jobs, organizing sponsored walks, making and selling crafts, putting on circus performances in the pedestrian zone or other activities, the pupils can raise funds for better learning and living conditions for children all over the world.
You can either join the nationwide day (in Germany it will be on the 29th of September 2011), or you can decide on another date.
The pupils can work for a day and donate the money they earn to Waldorf schools worldwide. They earn money for a good cause and gain some insight into an area of work.
Please notice: regulations can vary in each country. Do not start organizing a WOW-Day without checking the regulations that protects children and teenagers in your own country.
These regulations must be followed during the WOW-Day.
In Germany, for instance, pupils under the age of 13 are not allowed to be employed at all. They can perform chores for friends and relatives or organize a sponsored walk, flea market or cake sale with the whole class.
From the age of 13 children may do light and suitable work. They may not work more than 2 hours a day with the exception of small farms, where they may work 3 hours a day. The children may only work between 8 a.m and 6 p.m. Appropriate jobs could be, for instance, delivering newspapers, household chores, gardening, looking after children, extra lessons, harvesting, etc.
Persons between the ages of 15 and 18 years may not be required to work more than 8 hours a day between 6 a.m and 8 p.m (an exception is made for teenagers over the age of 16 who work on farms or bakeries, who may work at 5 a.m and until 9 p.m).
Before any child can be employed the parents or legal guardian must give their permission. In the job contract a signature is required.
As the WOW-Day is a school event, the children are over the school. The whole school, or single classes, or whole grades can participate in the WOW-Day. The important thing is that the school has the last say on the choice of activities. The insurance only covers the pupils when the WOW-Day is an official school event. That means that in addition to the extensive discussion about the projects, which takes place at school, there must be supervision for the pupils who do not want to participate. They may not have the day off (this would also be a pedagogical mistake, because it would lead to discontent amongst those who do participate). It is also a good idea for the teachers to visit a few of the places where the pupils are working.
Each pupil receives a job contract beforehand. There are three copies of the contract, one for the pupil, one for the employer and one for the school. The contract, when correctly filled out, serves as proof of participation for the pupil and it is also the receipt for the employer’s book-keeping.
The pupils take their job contracts and look for a place where they would like to work for a day. They can work in any shop, business or company of their choice. They can also be employed by the municipality. The pupils and their employers agree on an hourly rate or a set sum for the day. The employer must please transfer the money directly into the account given by the school.
We ask you kindly to do the bank transfer within four weeks. This enables us to forward the donations to the benefited projects promptly. In that way we can assure that the participating pupils receive a feedback as soon as possible.
When pupils volunteer to do something for children all over the world, then that’s a great thing! Inform the local press about your WOW-Day. It can really motivate the pupils when they read about their efforts in little newspaper report.
If pupils want to write a report about their WOW-Day, if there are newspaper articles or good photos then please send them to the Friends of Waldorf Education.
