Information for the Employer

(This text has been written for Germany; we send it to you as an example. Please change it according to the law in your country).

We are very glad that you want to support the WOW-Day (Waldorf One World). On this day the pupils want to do something for underprivileged children all over the world, for instance, by earning money for them by doing a one-day job.
If you are interested in offering one or more pupils a one-day job, we have provided the following information for you to read beforehand.

Laws for the protection of teenage employees

When providing a one-day job to pupils it is important to fulfil the regulations regarding safety at the work place and to adhere to the laws regarding teenage workers. As the pupils only work for a few hours, the unions have no reservations about allowing 13 and 14 year olds to participate. However, one must make sure that they only perform easy tasks that are suitable for children. The work is defined as easy when it does not have any negative effect on the development, health or ability of the child to attend school and lessons. The children may not work longer than 2 hours, on family run farms not longer than 3 hours a day. Teenagers between the ages of 15 and 18 years may work 8 hours a day, but only between 6 a.m and 8 p.m.One rule applies to all scholars under the age of 18: they must have permission to work from their parents or legal guardian.

Please notice: regulations can vary in each country. Before employing a pupil, please check the regulations that protects children and teenage in your own country.

Insurance

As the WOW-Day is a school event the scholars are insured over the school. In Germany, it is not necessary to pay social insurance for such activities. Please be sure of the tax regulations of your own country.

The job contract

Each pupil receives a job contract (3 copies), which must be signed by the pupil, a parent or legal guardian and the employer. The working agreement ends at the end of the day. The scholar needn’t resign. An example of the contract is to be found under downloads. The job contract is the official proof of participation for the scholar and is therefore necessary. Only the correctly filled out contract excuses the student from school and ensures that he or she is insured in the case of an accident. The school should receive their copy before the pupil begins work.

Pay

There is no set minimum wage that must be paid to pupils by law. Each pupil agrees on a wage or payment for the day with the employer. The wage should be appropriate for the work which is to be done and the age of the scholar. A guideline is 5 euro per hour. Please do not pay the students in cash, but rather transfer the amount into the account of the Friends of Waldorf Education (see Bank Transfer on the right).

We ask you kindly to do the bank transfer within four weeks. This enables us to forward the donations to the benefited projects promptly. In that way we can assure that the participating pupils receive a feedback as soon as possible.

Donation certificate and book-keeping

The employer does not receive a donation certificate, because it is the pupil that donates the money that he or she earns. In Germany, because it is such a special project, the tax offices do not require income tax or social insurance to be paid. The expense can be registered under “other costs”. The copy of the job contract is recognized as a receipt. Please check the tax regulations in your country.
