Emergency Education
Introduction
Many tragic events such as war and natural disasters take place around the world – and children suffer the most as a result of the same. In 2006, as we were hosting eight “Waldorf” non-profit organizations in Berlin, a pedagogue held a report on her work with traumatized children in Kosovo. Her report sparked the desire to work in the field of emergency education.
Due to the voluntary work of some engaged specialists, we were able to initiate our first pilot project after the martial conflicts in Lebanon in 2006. For a period of three weeks, we worked with traumatized children to prevent post-traumatic effects. Yet another action took place in Chengdu, China following the earthquake in June/July 2008.
As a consequence of the war in Gaza in December 2008 we thought it necessary to work with war-traumatized children in Gaza. A team composed of psychologists, teachers and therapists was formed to conduct emergency education in January and July 2009. Due to the ongoing conflicts and the situation in Gaza, we are currently trying to establish a long-term project to contribute to a sustainable improvement of the psychological state of the Palestinian children.
Following the earthquake in West-Sumatra, Indonesia on 30th September, 2009 the Friends of Waldorf Education sent an eleven-man crisis intervention team to West-Sumatra to help psycho-traumatized children, using the methods of Waldorf Education.
We are highly motivated to extend the field of “Emergency Education”, so that we are in a position to offer our pedagogic-therapy to those who are in need.
