Georgia: In 1999, the “Pedagogical Province” in Saguramo, located in 30 km distance to Tbilisi, started its work with young people coming from difficult social backgrounds, suffering from behavioural disorders or psychological problems. In 2002, the responsible body was established by founding the association “Rainbow e. V.”. In the meanwhile the initiative includes a publicly approved children’s home (“Pedagogical Province” with 8 children), a farm and a medical practice.
Saguramo, a village popular as a recreation locality, became a home to the Rainbow initiative. On the partly donated partly bought premises, they constructed a small “wood castle” and the first youngsters were admitted. Instead of a doctor’s fee the medical practice was given a few chicken and thus the beginning of a farm was made. Over time, a horse and a pair of ducks were bought and a ram was added as a gift from the villagers.
As the farm slowly developed through the construction of a barn and a stable and the cultivation of the fields, the initiative was also able to admit the first permanent foster children when the construction of a second house was completed in 2004. In 2008 Rainbow was finally publically approved and two six-year old boys, an eight-year old girl and another nine-year old boy joined the children’s home.
Furthermore the educational initiative “the quintessence” developed, next to the daily caring for children and the agricultural work. This initiative offers regular courses and annually changing seminars on certain topics and even a language course in German, preparing the young people who wish to intern in Germany.
The medical practice, which represents an important part of the Rainbow Initiative, started out as a part-time practice. Two doctors offer once a week consultation hours. In the future the whole population of the village should be able to get medical treatment through cooperation with a partner laboratory. Additionally a garden for medical plants has been established.
The Rainbow Initiative is being visited every now and then by whole school classes and young people who wish to spend their agricultural internship there. The contact to other initiatives, organisations and friends remains very important, since the public financial aids do not completely cover the costs of the initiative.
