Project of the Month, Mai 2012: Waldorf school Chudjand
After a few teachers had completed their training in Stuttgart, they went back in the mid 1990s to Tajikistan and began to build up a Waldorf school in Khujand, amidst a not very tolerant environment. Three years ago, the authorities have managed to chase the school out of its beautiful and lovingly restored rooms.
Since then, teachers and students moved into a village school and secretly continued with Waldorf education. They share the space with the village school and therefore the children come to school in two shifts. Ladu, the initiator explains that the Waldorf children are much more tolerant since they do not have to go to work next to school. She also describes the following: “Every teacher works almost 45 hours per week. That are two and a half jobs. We are often tired, but when we enter the class, we often forget everything.”
Currently 380 Waldorf children attend the school, where a total of 1,500 children are educated - but there is still no electricity and the water problems continue. And she ends her report: “We are so happy that we have studied Waldorf education and of course anthroposophy. This gives us new energy to continue.”
