Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Lan Kindergarten

Khoi (2) is the eldest of 2 children. His father works as labourer on a construction site, his mother stays home with a new born baby. The father's earning is very low; they can only afford to rent a single room without bathroom or kitchen for the whole family. Khoi joined Thanh Lan kindergarten 5 months ago. At first he was very weak, cried since he missed his mother. His health and the crying have improved slightly and he has now begun to play with the other children.

Nga (3) is an only child. Both her parents are factory workers with minimum wages. They have just enough to eat and pay the rent for a single room in a boarding house. They can only afford a token payment toward the school fee. Nga is bright and cheerful, quick to make friends and get attached to the teachers. She sings all day, except when eating and sleeping.

An (3) is an only child. Her father works as a labourer; her mother an office assistant. Their joint income is not enough to support a child and 2 sets of old and ailing grandparents. They are dependent on financial assistance in order to pay fee for their daughter to attend Tho Trang kindergarten. An has been at Tho Trang kindergarten for 9 months. She was quite sickly and weepy when she first came but has made quick progress lately. She is now a healthy and happy child who specially loves water colour painting and bread making. She gets on well with others and loves being mother to the baby dolls.

Tho Trang Kindergarten

Anh (3) lives with his older brother and his parents. His father is a shop assistant, his mother stays at home with a chronic illness. Their life is extremely hard as his father's earning is not enough to support 2 children at school and pay for his wife's treatment. Anh joined Tho Trang kindergarten just two months ago and is still at the settling down stage. He seems a quiet boy who prefers to watch everything that is going on.

Thao (4) is an only child. Her father works as grocery shop assistant, her mother looks after other people's children. They earn enough to live on but need help with paying Tho Trang's school fee. Thao has been at Tho Trang 5 months. She fits in easily with the rhythm of the class and loves all the activities, especially bread making. She is still fidgety and finds it hard to stay with one thing. She likes helping the teachers and loves playing with the girls.
